Yep it happened. But why now?

Ok so here is how it goes. I have been using azeures for a good 3-4 months now, and have been downloading *cough* *cough* some movies. So yeah. I know you guys do it also, whether its music, movies, games, or programs its all the same. We are stealing copyrighted material simple as that.

But Friday night my interent went down for no reason. At first i thought i needed to just reset the modem but after that didnt work i knew it was somehting else. Basketball practice was comming up so i didnt have enough time to really go into it. I also thiought that leaving the modem off for a while might do it some good. SO i come back from practice and guess what. It was still off. But considering that it was snowing for the whole day i figurered a cable was down or something lame like that.

So to keep it short, the internet was down for the whole weekend. Told my dad and he called up the cable company on monday morning. They then say we have been quarentied because we are a security risk. WTF? Security risk, could you be more vague? Then the little dick wouldnt say why and wouldnt tell us anyhting else. Damn idiot. I thought the governemtn flagged us as terorists and we were off to Gitmo Bay for some "questioning". I thought it was federal or somehting. He also said that they called 10 times to warn us. The thing is is that we have caller id and caller history. They ddint call a single time. Probably someone wanted to get off work early. Also i thought that one of our computer got spiked with a major worm or soemthing. But would/can they actually shut down your net access form that? I mean more than 90% of AOL users or zombie computers, does that mean we can shut down AOL!?

SO the next thing that happens is that they finally tell us what the hell it actually is. The guys exact words were, "You are downloading and uploading The Bourne Supremecy" and that "you must delete it from your computer". I was super happy because I was downloading a lot more than just one movie. Also i wasnt going to be tortured by the US. So what i want to know is:

-How did they catch me?

-Why just one movie? If they saw one wouldnt they have seen everything else?

-Is it legal what they did? Looking into what I download, and ordering me to delete something off my computer.

-How would they know that i actually deleted it?

-I thought with Bit torrent you cant get caught. Why now?

-What happens if i contineu to dl

-Can they do this?

-Why this movie?

-My ISP is Cox communications, are other ISPs doign the same?

-Im really pissed off what should i do?

-Could there have been some code imbedded into the file that used my computer as a host or the file uploaded itself?

---

You can spend the next month enjoying your movies elsewhere. We have no more tolerance for your piracy than your ISP.

That sucks, I have cox too and use bittorrent quite frequently. A few years ago, the made a big deal about not paying attention to what their customers use their connections for (hinting that they would turn their backs on filesharing). This makes me sad and scared.

Edit: I'd like to add that I use peer guardian 24/7 on my bittorent computer. I also remove torrents from seeding as soon as I can once the download is complete. I keep a Linux distro in my seeding, but thats it.

Speak for yourself ;) BTW this is General Hardware, maybe you meant to post in Networking instead? But given the general piracy theme, I predict it'll be locked rather than moved.

-How did they catch me?

Chances are, someone who owned copyright to the bourne sepremecy uploaded it, and logged all the IPs downloading it from him.

-Why just one movie? If they saw one wouldnt they have seen everything else?

see above^

-Is it legal what they did? Looking into what I download, and ordering me to delete something off my computer.

It is legal what they did if they owned the copyright. I'm not sure if they're allowed to order you to do anything without a court though.

-How would they know that i actually deleted it?

The ISP is probably just doing it because the MIAA asked them to, they don't really care to verify that you actually deleted anything.

-I thought with Bit torrent you cant get caught. Why now?

See number 1

-What happens if i contineu to dl

Probably nothing

-Can they do this?

They just did

-Why this movie?

The copyright owners were bored?

-My ISP is Cox communications, are other ISPs doign the same?

I don't think it's your ISP. (see number 1)

-Im really pissed off what should i do?

You're choice

-Could there have been some code imbedded into the file that used my computer as a host or the file uploaded itself?

Probably not, although anything is possible

You know how peer-to-peer services work, right? Your computer opens up a connection with another one and you "share" files. If that computer you connect to is the Feds, MPAA, RIAA, studios, or even private detectives hired by any of the afore mentioned parties, they will have your IP address. From that, it's easy enough to send a DCMA notice to the ISP and shut you down. Of course, your ISP could have noticed your network activity and shut you down on their own, but that's a bit less likely.

BitTorrent is "safe" because there isn't a central server. This means that the authorities have a bit harder time shutting down the service. The users are just as open as any if they aren't taking precautions. Were you using SafePeer? A proxy server? Computers are only as smart and safe as the user sitting in front of them.
