Caught my roommate smoking pot in his room lastnight...

So I come home lastnight and the door is locked, not too unusual. The as I unlock and open it I see my roommate quickly walking to his closet to put his bong away. I then enter his room and it smells like pot. He's kinda sharp so he starts ranting and raving about the new iphone and showing all that jazz. While doing that I notice a lighter in his hand. That was lastnight. Now I'm just trying to figure out what I should do. My parents own this place and smoking of anything has been banned since day one but I've let it slip on the back porch for about 6 months. On the one hand he's been getting on my nerves a lot lately but on the other hand the extra $600 is nice.

I dunno if I should just give him the boot right now or make his life a living hell. Keep in mind I've known him since 4th grade and at one point he was my best friend.

I just want to set a few things straight.

First of all I'm not going to say I'm not spoiled(I am) or that I'm not a tool(probably am).
I don't like pot.
I have asked him on multiple occasions not to smoke here period. He'd stop for a week and then start back up.

My parents control my life. They own the condo we are staying in and they own my car. They've already taken my car for a week once because they caught him smoking cigarettes on the porch with the door open. If they ever found out he was smoking pot I'd lose the car and a place to live. My father has made it very clear that I am the one responsible for everything that goes on there. They won't punish him but they will punish me. They also live 5mins away and have their own key.

Being a condo we are surround by neighbors. Half of which are college students who's parents bought them condos, the other half, which mainly live on the floor above us, are 50+. These are also not cheap, we are talking upwards of $250K+ each. His $600 is paying for about 1/4 of what the total rent/utlites are. He never signed a lease, we never made a contract. Basicly he is a paying guest.

When he smokes outside he usually invites 4-7 other people over to smoke with him. Then they all end up watching TV till 5am and crashing on my furniture(which has pissed my parents off to no end). All of it is mine, the sofas, home theater(yes, I paid for it), the only thing he brought was a bed and a desk.

He is not dealing to my knowledge but he has had up to an ounce here before. But he does hand out his key when I'm not around and he's at work so that his friends can come smoke

I DID NOT UNLOCK his door. I unlocked the front door so I could get in the condo and his door is the first one in and about 4 feet away. It was also wide open and looking into his wide open closet where I saw him(front the front door) walk over and put his bong in it and then shut the closet. He then invited me into his room to talk about the iPhone. Also his room has two windows, neither of them open.

We were best friends until about halfway through high school when we went to different schools. His mother and my mother are really close thus they offered him a place to stay when living with his dad wasn't working out.

I'm going to talk to him this weekend and set some new rules.
No smoking anything, anywhere.
No one spends the night here unless they do so in his room.
Limiting him to 3 guest at any given time.

Just tell him if he's going to smoke that, don't do it on that property.

Tell him to keep smoking on the porch, collect your 600, tell him you don't want that stuff in the room at all peroid. Btw you sound like an a-hole, I hope one day someone gives you the boot peon.

As a Canadian I find the American treatment of pot rather bizarre. I rather have a pot smoker live in my place than a drinker or cigarette smoker.

Depends what you think is the negatives of his smoking pot on your property, I suppose? It is your property and so your rules are the ones he should follow, but I think you're really blowing things out of proportion. What's the worst that could happen if he continued?

Just make sure he is not dealing or having dealers at the house. Your parents could lose their property if it is suspected that trafficking is going on in the house.

Silly, I know, but that's the war on drugs for you.

Pot is basically harmless. However, you want to be sure he's not mixed up in any other drugs. As long as he's honest and gainfully employed, pot is just not a big deal.

Finally, make sure he opens a window and keeps his bong clean. A lot of pot smoking can make a room smell funky and bong water is just nasty.

BTW, you'll be annoyed with just about any roommate. You just pick the ones that annoy you least.

For me as a landlord........ it's not the pot smoking..... he can smoke outside. But the smokin g inside really would tee me off. It's relly hard if not impossible to get the smoke smell out (funk febreeze :p). Just keep that sh!t outside.

the smell of pot disappears pretty quickly, unless the stuff just really reeks. I think you are thinking about cigarette smoke, which is a bitch to get the smell out!

I can't believe "tell him to never smoke inside again" wasn't an option. Therefore you are an idiot.

Tell him not to get completely drunk then smoke some old, nasty pot. He'll get the spins and end up on the porch with his head hung over the edge puking his guts out.

wow @ the poll options.. just tell him to smoke on the porch instead of the house and don't be an ass about it, he'll probably be fine with it.

Not in defense of the guy as he should respect you as the landlord, but pot smoke doesn't really "taint" the house as something like cigarette smoke does.
