Sprint and TMobile with kick ass leading edge phones, who'd have thought???

I do have to give Sprint the edge though, the EVO is going to be on the top of a rather large pile of smartphones.

WTF will Apple do? None of the likely changes to the Gen IV iPhone come close to what the Evo will be... the Nexus One is pretty good, the HD2 is pretty good... I have seen multiple comments than when Jobs has a new product coming out (iPad), the other stuff languishes for upgrades and changes...

HTC will undoubtedly release a HD2/Evo type phone for 3G/CDMA on the other carriers, a 1.5 ghz Snapdragon is likely soon...

The thing about Apple's strategy is that they use their brand and aesthetics to sell their product. Keep in mind that the majority of consumers don't browse forums like this or read tech news. Android is just starting to gain some mass market brand awareness and it's been out for a long while now. 4G won't be something that means much to consumers right off the bat, and HTC isn't nearly as well known as Apple.

I'm not saying it's not possible to compete with Apple and the iPhone, but Google and HTC/Motorola/etc need to keep devices that are more advanced than the iPhone on the market for multiple generations of phones. This will make consumers think that Android is a legitimate platform just like the iPhone.

Keep in mind that this is my opinion and I personally think that Android and the EVO 4G will definitely be my next phone (and first smartphone), but I've seen what Apple's brand awareness can do.

Well, the speed/cooleness factor/fanciest screen/etc crown for smartphones changes even faster than in the comp/laptop world it seems, and it definitely is a challenge for Apple given its one-carrier, one-phone per year strategy we have seen thus far.

That being said, I bet the new iphone will once again be really neat and be top dog for a few months, and apple will sell a ton of them. Sure, it isn't on a 4g network, but Sprint isn't that large of a carrier, and we have yet to see how a WIMAX network handles under a lot of stress in terms of actual throughput, etc.

WTF will Apple do??? Release a new refresh of their iPhone and sell millions. They don't have to do anything. They lack many basic functions that almost every other smartphone has but people don't care. Apple could introduce a bag of crap as their next product and people will buy it.

<---hugs his iPad pre order confirmation, and giggles like a fool, checks tethering app on HD2 to make sure it works, speed tests HSPA network again...

They already did - it's called the iPad.

Why do you think Apple is suing HTC?

As for the iPhone, it will probably be at, or better than N1 specs, but I doubt it will be as nice as the EVO, hardware wise. It will sell like hotcakes, though.

maybe because it isn't all about the hardware...

Was only a matter of time until all of the carriers obtained amazing phones.

Now carriers will finally have to start competing with one another based on coverage, customer support, overall quality, and price rather than "we have exclusive rights to the phone you want so bend over while we take advantage of no competition".

I don't really see how that has changed all that much over the past year or so. Carriers still have tentpole phones to borrow an expression from hollywood, and at best you get a staggered release of a device across multiple carriers.
