Categorizing applications in Ubuntu

I recently installed some emulators. Most of them are in the applications task bar under games. One of the emulators I installed. Gens, isn't under games. In order to run it, I have to go to Terminal. I guess it isn't under games like my other two emulators because I just found Gens on some off the wall guy's site in deb format. Now, how do I put applications that I didn't acquire from the Synaptic Package Manager or Add/Remove Applications under games or the other categories?

Apparently the guy who made the Gens package didn't do it properly and didn't provide/register a menu entry. That's the primary reason why I avoid non-official packages whenever possible, not menu entries specifically but because non-official packagers don't usually put the same amount of time into packages that Debian and Ubuntu devs do.

To create an entry you should be able to just run alacarte.

Well, this is going to be the only non-official app I'm going to DL. I just had to have my Gens. 😛
Alacarte worked great, thanks!

Another question: What does one do with .tar.gz files? I read a tutorial but when I typed their example code the Terminal kept giving me errors.
Yeah, I'm still trying to grow my Linux/GNU legs. 😛

What did you type in?

tar.gz files are sort of like zip files to extract them one usually does 'tar xfvzp blah.tar.gz' although File Roller that comes with Ubuntu can open them as well.

No, the example code to extra the tar.gz...

Why would I care that you type alacarte to run the menu editor if that worked?
