at first i thought this was pointless, but i can see how it would be handy if you are stuck in the wild marshes of australia and you need to catch a rabbit for food and all you have lying around is snakes

The reverse is also true. If you have a bunch of rabbits lying around and need to catch a snake the rabbit is good bait.

What if the rabbit got bitten; do you want to eat a rabbit full of venom? Then there's the danger of getting bit while pulling the rabbit out of the hole.

Why does he need snakes exactly? Apart from the fact that snake tastes a lot better than rabbit.
