I get SO tired of that. You cant get the job without prior experience, or relevant experience. But, WITHOUT the job you dont get the experience!! Such a unbreakable loop of misery.....

So, how does one break that cycle? How do you get a job in a field you dont have experience in?! Luck? Know someone? Do bomb threats or hostage taking work?

I'd say that its a matter of who you know and not what you know. If you know the right people I don't see why or how you wouldn't be able to land a job in your field with or without experience.

Thats very true. You need contacts. Most jobs are not advertised.

Well, the truth is, you can get jobs without experience most easily when the economy is bullish...
Then people who barely know how to write their name in Notepad get 40k+ web designer jobs.

Right now, with a lot of experienced people unemployed, it is hard to break that catch .22.

I had to stay in academia since I could not find a job - and I have extremely good education, wonderful letters of reference, and a well diverse background.
It's tough right now.

I concur with "who you know."

Find the industry you want to be involved in and then seek people in that field out and NETWORK!!!! There are way too many people in the IT industry that have no clue about their job that are in the job because they know someone.

Yeah, I agree you have to network.

But I also agree that everything sucks Donkey Balls right now. I'm a graduate, living at HOME. <---Pathetic, I know. But, I'm working at some crappy job, until something turns up.

This may sound MEAN, but it's not. It's nice to hear that everyone is having problems right now, and it's not just me.

Oh well, at least we still have ATOT. :p That's something that they can't take away from us.

Question: why do all entry-level jobs require TWO YEARS of experience??? If I had two years of experience, would I be looking for an ENTRY-LEVEL JOB??!!??!?!?

Corollary: If I wasn't recruited out of college for a Fortune 500 position, but rather worked for a startup for a year and then decided to apply for a job at a larger firm, HOW CAN I GET IN?? They either require TWO YEARS of experience, or ON-CAMPUS interviews!!! I'm in no-man's land!!!
