I know that several years ago you could take a workstation video card like a Quadro 4 or FireGL (from the same era) and run standard GeForce or Radeon (Catalyst) driver. Is it still possible to do this today using modern Quadros or FireGLs and their respectable desktop counterparts driver?

Seems to me like they would still run, but I don't think you would have luck with tweaking of any sort, I'd be interested in the answer as well. Do you have the resources to try it?

Catalyst and Detonator drivers used to by default run on their respected hardware with out any tweaking necessary. However, I do not know if it is still true with the latest generation of harware.

Standard Quadro and FireGL drivers produce very precice images at the expence of frame rates while Catalyst and Detonator drivers do the exact opposite; they produce higher frame rates at the expence of quality.

EDIT: I dont have the hardware at this time, if I did I would not be asking this question. I need to know because I have an ebay aution ending soon and I want to bid on it.

What model card are you talking about. I presently use Quadro and FireGl. Any drivers I needed was gleaned off the respective websites.
Are you referring to cards before 2002?
As acegazda asked. What resorces are you trying to use?

  1. I want to use a FireGL V7100 (or faster) with standard Catalyst Drivers.
  2. I cant remember from how long ago it was, but it could have been from back in 2002. I do know that Quadro4 cards used to work with GeForce Drivers. The same was true for ATi: You could use Radeon drivers with FireGL products.
  3. What do you mean by the last question?

It is still possible with BIOS and/or resistor mods depending on the model but why would you want to pay 50% ~ 100% more for the same hardware? The GPUs are not significantly different, only the drivers are.

These polls look really promising. A 3 way tie accross the board. It looks like many of us are not sure about it.
