Catalyst Driver problem from 8.4 on

Heya,

A few weeks ago, I upgraded from Catalyst 8.3 to 8.4 for my X1900XTX on Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

When the driver installed, there was a black bar about 1" wide, sort of like letterboxing, but all the way around my monitor (24" LCD @ 1920X1200).

I thought perhaps it was a conflict with the old drivers, so I uninstalled them and used driver cleaner in safe mode. I reinstalled the 8.4 but the issue came straight back. I uninstalled 8.4 and reinstalled 8.3, problem solved. When 8.5 came out I gave them a shot with the same bars showing up. Reverting to 8.3 solved the problem again.

Thinking it was a windows problem I did a clean install of Vista, but after tossing on 8.5 as the 1st set of drivers on the clean install, the problem was there again.

I'm hoping someone can either help me figure out why this might be happening or perhaps has had the same problem.

I appreciate any input you have.

Thanks!

Kinda sounds like the vid driver is giving you a "center'd" instead of "stretch" or fill the page. Aspect ratio problem I think. < Need more coffee. :)

CCC--Digital Panel properties---'Scale Image to full panel size'

Play around with the settings there see if it changes.

I did mess around with those settings, but couldn't affect any change to the display. Perhaps I missed something... I'll give it another shot later today.

Thanks for the input so far. Hopefully we can get this licked :)

I had the same issue when I installed 8.5, I have the same card and a westinghouse monitor. CCC was set to "scale to full panel". I just rolled back to 7.11 and problem gone.

Do you find the 7.11 perform better? I've heard that sometimes the older driver versions are better suited to the older cards, but didn't know if there was any stock in that thinking.

If you were running XP I would say does you're monitor require drivers but since it's Vista I don't think thats a problem. Maybe try a different DVI connection on your monitor and graphics card. Seeing as you did a total clean install of Vista it would be hard to believe it is a software conflict (besides the common variable being the 8.5's) thats why I would have a look into your monitors panel settings like mentioned above. Is you're X1900 AGP?

I looked at the DDC-CI and it was already set to "On". I guess I will turn it off next time I install the 8.5's. I tried the different DVI ports with the same effect each time. My X1900XTX is PCI-E.

the 7.11 driver performs better in call of duty 2 vs. 8.3, since I still play that quite a bit I use them. I don't notice much difference in other games.
