I remember reading when the CCC first came out that it was sort of a memory hog and not really worth it. Is this still true? I have Cats 5.6 and want to install 5.10 but am not sure whether to get the CCC or not.

Always get the CCC, you'll have trouble if you don't. You can't control anything anymore with the classic CP, it hasn't been updated for months and they won't update it anymore.

The CCC doesn't have to be opened anymore, everything can be controlled from the system tray icon now, so you don't have to worry about any memory hogging :p

What's wrong with the normal CP? It's what I have now, seems to work fine.

And I don't want a system tray icon for something I'll hardly touch, do they still have the option to remove it?

CCC is just as bloated and slow as when it came out. Use ATi Tray Tools instead.

Is that third party? I just installed 5.10 with the CCC, seems fine, I disabled the tray icon and anything in startup related to it.

I think ATI Tray Tools gives you more options. Usually the third party things are better anyway...they're only being made based off frustration of lack of features from comparable first party utilities.

I hardly use anything in my system tray anyway. Why have it there in the first place?
I unchecked the option to have the basic one there.

The main reason is to control AA because that's the setting I most commonly change.

I would recommend installing the drivers only and then installing ATI Tray Tools. It uses very little resources and it does everything that CCC does plus lots more.

I think I would follow that advice IF I actually used those settings often and changed them and accessed them a lot. I never touch them, really, just leave AA maxed for everything, etc., so I can just use the CCC and disable any background/tray stuff.
