Single 5850 here. It causes a crash in borderlands so I have disabled it. Everything seems to run fine without it. So why have it on?

well, supposedly catalyst ai is just ATi optimizations for a game. However, disabling Catalyst Ai also disables crossfire if you have it.

Honestly, Catalyst drivers have been borked since 10.6

I can repeat crossfire issues even with a new windows install on 10.6 and 10.7 but miraculously can fix them when i go back to 10.5

This is a rather well known thing.

What i can't figure out is how the smart guys at AMD can't seem to fix this shit

It's like a performance tweak that's specific to each game you play if I remember correctly. You obviously won't be missing out on anything if its making your game crash, but personally I enable it for every game that isn't based on the UT3 engine (the only engine I've seen give these drivers problems so far).

In terms of performance you're not going to notice a difference with it on or off no matter what title you're playing, unless you crossfire as lava stated.
