I have an X2 4000, with 2GB of RAM and a Radeoon 4350 video card. A stock install of Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc, cannot play even 720p videos. Its choppy and drops frames like crazy.
Getting the Catalyst 10.7 drivers installed wasn't too hard, getting VLC 1.1.2 install required adding a software source because 1.1.x hasn't officially been released for Linux yet. Once installed though, most 720p and 1080p videos play very smooth.
A few Handbrake rips I made from my BluRay movies, which were completely unplayable previously, play nearly flawlessly. Only the occasional dropped frame during faster scenes. Not too shabby.
