Cat5e cable question

redly

Golden Member
I've got a spool of Cat5e cable. There are 4 twisted pairs to the cable. Am I correct in thinking that 100mbps ethernet only uses 2 of those pairs??

If so, would it be possible to use the 2 pairs for ethernet and the other two pairs for a telephone line?

I'm routing some cable up to my second floor bedrooms for the home network, and it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone and run the phone in the same cable.

Any thoughts?

Yes you can do it but why in the hell would like to cause problems on your phone or youheaven forbid you get booted off the net surfing your p0rN. Do youself a favor and dont do it. Sooner or later it will cause a problem.

If you are pulling the cable anyway measure 15 ft more than you need and then pull off 3 more feet for good measure and then mark it with tape. Pull another run out mark it, then pull another out an mark it tape all three together at one end then tape thit every 15 inches or so and pull three runs at once.

If your not a cheap basted then go get two more boxes and pull all three from the box. I know you said you only needed two but an extra never hurts. Can you say speakers?

That was actualy the whole point in why the cable is like that. Originally that one cable was going to handle the network, phone, and fax traffic all at the same time. Genius idea. Until things got going faster and interferience came into play and things like that. I'd just put some phone cable and cat5 cable next to each other but not use the same cable.

OK, second question...where is the cheapest place to get RJ11 and RJ45 sockets and plates....and CATV for that matter
