Cat5e cable going through floors

I keep reading, when trying to purchase cat5 cable that its not to be used for going through a floor. Considering you drill and hole into a floor and then drop the cable from say a router to a drop down ceiling and into a downstairs computer...is it really that bad.

It has to do with building codes and the cable used. Some cable is only rated for horizontal some is rated for air duct etc. I think you will be ok but if there is a fire and you die from the fumes before yo ucan get out we did worn you.

Cat5 riser is rated for the vertical runs. Almost all Cat5 is riser these days.
Cat5 plenum is rated for use in air plenum spaces in the heating and air conditioning system. It will not give off noxious gasses in a fire. Riser puts off poisonus gas when heated or burned.
Many buildings use the overhead space above a dropped ceiling as a "plenum" or portion of the ducting system, hence the need for a safer cable. In a regular house situation, plenum is unnecessary.
