Cat5 Cable - What's that nylon string for in the cable?

Been making my own cables for a few mo's now and don't know the purpose of the nylon string in the cable. I cut it off when I setup the 'ends'. Just curious if it all has it or just the cable I've been buying from the Home Depot.
