Cat wound

So my cat's tracking blood all around the house, he seems to have hurt his paw nicely. Should I put Polysporon on it? The wound smells really gross, which leads me to suspect a bacterial infection. Any ideas?

it wasnt even bleeding before, so i thought it happened tonight?!

i noticed he smelled bad last night, but i assumed he just had taken a fresh dump...lol

If it is the wound that is smelling, you need antibiotics, stat.

I once found a little bite on my cat's back. She proceeded to be sulky and standoffish for a few days, when she refused any attention from me. When she finally came up for some affection, I found a lump under her back the size of half a tennis ball.

Drainage (minor surgery) and meds cost me 330$.

Ealier is always cheaper. Would've cost me 90$ if I had taken her in immediately.

If the wound actually smells rotten, you need to take your kitty to a vet NOW.

No, not tomorrow. NOW.

If she has gangrene, she could lose her paw.

can i polysporon for the time being? or would he just lick it off ya think?
What is polysporin?

Clean the wound. See if you can figure out exactly what type it is. Make sure she didn't just step in something foul smelling or something.

If you clean the wound and it is still rotten smelling, your cat is in need of immediate medical attention.

I'm no vet, but that's just common sense. Rotting flesh is a very, very bad thing.

my guess is u'd get ur eye scratched out if u tried putting on antiseptic treatments that hurt... u'd probably have to bandage it too .. else he'd lick it off.

Yeah, you'd need to bandage it.

This sounds pretty serious, though. I don't think I would try and tackle this one at home. It must be a very deep wound to have contracted gangrene, assuming thats what the foul smell is.

If you absolutely can't take her until tomorrow, I would clean the wound as best as you can, use the cream and bandage it up well.

You should probably clean and reapply the cream several times during the day. But I'd imagine if you can do that, you may as well just take her to the vet.

i inspected closer, definitely a stinky wound. i cant tell what he did though, it almost seems like he broke a claw and it bent in such a way that it stabs himself. it is painful enough for him that blowing on it makes him writhe around =

i put some polysporon on and decided not to bandage because it'd cause him TONS of pain to take off later and just followed him around and made sure he didnt lick it off until it had time to soak in

Please tell me you are taking him to a vet today. As for polysporin make sure it does not contain any aspirin. Aspirin is deadly for cats.

Edit: Polysporin should be ok for cats according to some cat first aid sites I looked at.

no, no aspirin. i plan to take him today if at all possible, but i wouldnt be surprised if there already booked for the day

good to hear its okay then for cats.

i tried to take pics and my battery is dead

Take him to the vet! Cat injuries are not treated the same as humans.

Every town has an emergency clinc for pets. You can get him seen if you want to.

no...we dont...last time i went to the vet without an appointment the secretary chewed me out to no end. only reason i got in was the vet came in early. but id be surprised if i dont find something

If you explain the situation including the fact that there is an odor your vet should be able to squeeze you in today. Ours does that for us all the time, all we need to do is call ahead and explain the situation.

Ummm no, you go to the vet and if the secretary chews you out you for not having an appointment then you chew back. This is something of an emergency unless you don't mind that she lose her claw and possibly the whole paw. Time is a factor.

No vet worth his/her salt is gonna refuse an actual emergency.....and I'm sorry, but a broken claw bent into the paw where it's emitting a rotten smell is an emergency.

Kitty needs to see a vet asap! Clean out the wound well and put the polysporon on it. Make sure the wound stays clean and if kitty likes to go outside, keep it confined indoors for the time being.

WTF? you've spend 2.5 hours posting on a message board about your cat yet it needs to goto the vet immediately. Take your cat NOW and just explain the situation to the receptionist.
