You CAN train a cat to use the toilet.
It takes a good bit of effort, and it may take you 2 monthes, but It is easily worth it.

Use the crystals type litter, it costs more but lasts about 2-3 times longer so it almost evens out. I think the original "Litter Pearls" (I think that's what they were called) were better than the newer big brand name versions other than the fact that the little round pellets rolled around all over the place after the cat had scratched in the box a few times.
