CAT driver install failure. PLEASE Help...

Ok, I was running 3.7's, and finally decided up upgrade to 3.9s. So I did what everyone says to do. I uninstalled the CAT control panel, rebooted, then uninstalled the display driver, rebooted.

When I ran the executable for the 3.9s, it began to load, until I got this: "SEVERE - This application can not continue, please install a stand VGA driver before running this application". WTF!

Its like it doesnt recognize the Windows XP driver that it must be using... I tried Driver Cleaner 2, and nothing is working. I even tried the 3.7's again, and it did the same thing.

Please help!

Radeon 9700 Pro
Windows XP

Have you tried setting the video driver to "Standard VGA" then doing the driver and cab cleanup? I'm still running the Omega drivers based on the 3.7's. The way I look at it, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Especially when it comes to video card drivers. From what I understand there's not a huge difference in performance and none of the games I play have problems with the 3.7's. Hope you can get it worked out.

I don't have an XP machine in front of me right now (my work uses Win2000 Pro). If the driver isn't installed or has a problem the video card should have a yellow bang next to it in device manager or be detected as "other devices" maybe? Can you do an update driver on the device and then "Display a list of known drivers..." and see if Standard VGA is an option in the driver list.

Have you run the driver and cab cleaner after setting it to standard VGA? And since you had problems upgrading to the 3.9's I'd try going back to the 3.7's also. You know they worked so stick with them.

Yeah, I tried to install the 3.7s again, and the exact same error came up. Maybe there is still some of the old driver left? If so, why didnt the uninstall get rid of it, and why wouldnt the DriverCleaner2 get rid of what was left?

I dont mean to be so impatient, but I need the computer for work...

Best to run Driver cleaner and cab cleaner(do cab cleaner first) in safe mode after you`ve removed driver and Control Panel, reboot and try installing the CAT 3.9s,btw are using the all complete setup installation that has both the driver and ATi Control Panel or are you downloading the driver and Control Panel seperate? If the latter remember to install the driver first before the Control Panel, you might find the ATI 3.9s single complete(about 25mb) setup ATI installation easier.

So far the 3.9s are solid for me.

If that doesn't work (strange) then try Omega's.

I have tried both... I know to install the driver itself first. That is the problem...

Blah...

I wonder what I did wrong...

Did you disable your anti-virus, sometimes they can cause problems with installation. One more thing I would run Driver Cleaner for both "Nvidia" and" ATi" files,I presume your previous card was Nvidia.

The way I understand it driver/cab cleaner should be able to remove all of the stray ATI/Nvidia drivers and registry entries left over from an incomplete uninstall. You could also scan your drive and registry for them manually. You could try clearing your temp directory as well since an install ended before completing maybe there's some left over junk in there causing repeat errors.

Just had our tech look at it over lunch, and he is totally perplexed...

It doesnt seems to be able to load the default VGA driver. Yet, and while it wont install the CAT drivers, it still knows it is a Radeon 9700 Pro... Looks a like a system overhaul is needed...

Maybe try re-installing your mobo chipset drivers first, maybe you fubured them with driver cleaner (nforce?)

It is an Nforce 2 motherboard, but I dont see how the DriverCleaner would have screwed those drivers. We were specifically targeting ATI items with it.

Use Winzip to open the downloaded Catalyst file, and decompress it to a temporary directory. In the WDM/Win2k folder, or something like that, will be the drivers.
In Device Manager, maybe you can do Update Driver for the current videocard, and force it to use those drivers. If they load right (or even if they don't), reboot, and then try the normal installation procedure.

Also, in Device Manager, something else to check:
Under the View menu, click on "Show hidden devices" and see what else is visible then under your display adapters.

This worked like a champ for me! I was having all sorts of strange issues, installing the Omega drivers worked without issue.
Omega drivers

try reloading XP... then youll be sure youre installing fresh... I dunno but i think reloading xp solves everything =p
