Cat about to be declawed.... :(

I trim my cat's claws often, so he can't hurt much. That's a good thing, since he seems to like using me as a scratching post while I sleep

That said, I do think that declawing a cat is humane considering the alternative of giving it away to a pound where it's likely to be euthanized.

In many European countries the practice is forbidden under the terms of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals[2] , unless there is a medical indication for the procedure, or a veterinarian considers it beneficial to the animal.

Some European countries go further, such as Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland[3], where declawing cats for non-medical reasons is always illegal under their laws against cruelty to animals.

That's true. It was just the first result in google I found some good links after looking a bit more.

But I've had cats my whole life. My current one is 3 now, and still has all his claws. He is busily doing the best he can to prevent me from typing right now.

First off if your cats has to be outdoors to have fun, then that says a lot of it's environment.

Some have had to declaw all four paws in order to live well with a cat (IMHO saving a cat > letting it be euthanized).

It's extremely important that declawed cats stay indoors...if your cat is bored get them a friend...my cats enjoy being around their brothers...some like solitude.

Anyway pets belong indoors, this ain't the 19th century anymore.

A toddler would love to roam outside as well.

I own 4 cats, 1 is declawed (he came that way when I adopted him), and he has trouble running downstairs because of the declawing. When he tries to screetch to halt while running, it's like watching a car with failing brakes.

Seriously though, don't declaw the cat if you are going to throw it outside. Otherwise, if it'll stay inside, don't stop at the claws, knock the whole legs off. They'll be just as useful.
