Cat about to be declawed.... :(

I had a cat that had a litter of 4 kittens a number of years ago and I gave them all to friends/family and one of the friends I gave a kitten to had her declawed. That poor cat was in misery for weeks after. Yeah, they adapt...just as a person adapts to losing a limb. I'll never forget that and I'll never declaw a cat, and I've had numerous cats over the years since then.

BTW-Every pet I've owned since then (and I've rescued many) have been neutered/spade, but never declawed. 😉

I'm not agreeing with Canai, but what you say about cleaning up the piss and it taking 5min? It's not possible!......... Ahem....... It's Impossible! The only way to remove the smell, is to replace the padding and carpet. I don't care how much of that special spray for cat piss you spray on it, it 'aint comin' up. Trust me! It's going to smell for a LONG time! If you're lucky, it will soak through the padding and to the plywood flooring underneath.

When I first met my wife she had 2 cats and the house smelled of cat piss. She said it was from the cats spraying. Cats were fixed, put out on the porch, carpet and pad replaced, plywood floor treated and that was that. They stay on the new porch 80% of the time now. They only come in when someone is home.

For those of you with cats, here's what I bought for them when I moved into my new house. You see these in PetsMart, etc for an easy $400.++, but you can get these for under $200.00 on Fleabay. Paid $160. for the one in the pic. It's 6'8in tall and the Brand is ArmarKat. Don't buy from the webpage....... Better deal on Fleabay from same Co.

My sick cat (who was 'fixed') peed in my house which had carpet at the time and in my car during one of the trips to/from the animal hospital. Cat pee simply does not come our of carpet/padding. I tried every oder eliminator or cover up and it never went away until I had the carpet removed and sold the car.

I think you were agreeing with me there. If not, reread what you bolded in my post.
It sounded as though you were disagreeing 😕

Hm, our youngest kitten was fine within a couple days of his declawing.

If we torture human enemy combatants, why not cats? This is torture for human convenience. How the fuck do you know your cat is 'perfectly happy'? Animals hide pain as a defense mechanism.

Thumbs up to the OP for not declawing. It's simple. If you love your pet, you don't torture it because it looks like it'll be fine after it recuperates.

animal happiness has been studied. Declawing doesn't skew it when done properly. Most of the time the declawing leads to a better human/cat relationship.

I will admit the best would be to leave a cat just like they were born.

However, then you'd need to find rodents fed only their natural diet, allow them to roam and not get hit by cars, have someone start an engine with them laying on it, roll over them, etc... You'd also need to find a place more than likely that allowed this pet. Not all people are doing well and many need to succumb to rent rules.

When all is said and done though, most cats are now facing a basic coin toss: Do I get altered and live or not and be euthanized? My money is most cats would want to live the short possible 2 decades they get in this roll of the dice.

My three cats are altered and declawed. No one would say they are unhappy...they live very active lives in the small amount of the planet I can call my own.

I am a Zoologist by education and life. Comp Sci by trade. Mechanic/Woodworker by hobby. I will say many above like to spout out just crap about things they just don't understand.

I'm in total agreement with you. :thumbsup: I've had cat pee on carpet in the house and car. It just doesn't come out.

I'd recommend another vet. None of the cats I've had declawed were miserable after the procedure. All of them walked, ran, jumped, played, etc just like they did before it. The only thing they did differently was lick their paws more than usual. Oh, and I could tell they didn't think much of the shredded newspaper for litter.
