I have been buying up a lot of cheap video cards lately and testing linux compatibility.

I tested an HD 4830 @ 675/2200 and an HD 3870 @ 860/2450 in WinXP.

Ran 3DMark 06 with 16X AF and 4X AA (which is how I play most games @ 1280 x 1024).

I was surprised to see the 3870 get 8900 and the 4830 score 10700 which is less than 20% more.

I know a ways back the HD 38xx series was criticized to for taking a large performance hit with AA enabled compared to Nvidia G92/G94.

Just wondering if the newer ATI drivers improved the HD 38xx AA peformance by a significant amount?

3Dmark06 is really really cpu limited and I would not use it to accurately compare graphics cards' performance. You are better off testing actual games and enabling FSAA in them and comparing.

3Dmark is meaningless; in actual games the 4xxx series is 2-3 times faster than the 3xxx series with traditional MSAA.

3DMark06 is so CPU bound, that you can plug a Tri-SLI or a Quad Crossfire setup with your same CPU, and the score won't chage that much. HD 4XXX anti aliasing performance is spectacular, but for some odd reason, it's Edge Detect filter performance isn't much faster compared to the HD 3xxx
