A member here yesterday helped me with this same thing. Although its a HD 3870.

I am not sure if it works with the HD 4870 though.

Read this thread from yesterday.

I think I read on another forum, that it can be done for the 4870 as well. I have my wifes fan running at a constant 65% fan. Temps stay at 40C.

i have get this fix, i don't want to burn the chip in the first day.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="58" />

I have copied the above into a newly created profile.

however the fan speed didn't change at all. no temperature drop significantly

In the box you got from Asus with your card, you should have a Utilities CD. Pop that in and install the Utilities. In that selection there will be an option to install Smart Doctor. That program regulates your fan speeds and GPU speeds.

i just installed the SmartDoctor thingy.

I have set the fan to Manual Mode

level at 30%, anything higher than that it is noticable.

is setting it to 30% enough? i see people saying even at 58% but with another utility and saying it is not noticable.
Is it a different standard of the percentage we are talking about?

should i keep it at Manual mode even when i play games?

With my Powercolor HD4870, 26% was fine but I got over 80C idle and load was starting to ramp up hitting 90C.

30% was audible and unbearable unless I was gaming. I used a manual 35% for gaming but it still bugged me.

i set mine at 30% with smart doctor.
Idle 58C

is it reasonable?

i just want to put it at coolest at un-audioable

there is totally nothing wrong with expertool . i just want to stick with one and then find another if they are not working properly.

but now i find weird things...

just got the software FurMark
to loop and do the 3d stability test.

i find that if i use Asus Smartdoctor, once it hit 70C, the fan will speed up 100%, but it won't slow down anymore even at 45C(i have set manual fan speed at 30%, but it will spin 100% if it gets hotter)

when i use expertool, it will never spin more than 26% even at 84C

When I'm fragging with headphones on, I don't give a damn how loud my computer is.

Expert tool doesn't work on XP x64. Not to highjack the thread, but I got an HD 4870 a few days ago. During games after a certain amount of time, the game freezes and vpu recover pops up. My power supply is sufficient and my case has very good air flow, drivers up to date, all that stuff. I'm still diagnosing the problem, but I have a feeling I should just increase the fan speed. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure windows is set to show hidden files.

First Enable Overdrive in the Catalyst Control Center.

Next Create a new Profile using the Profiles Manager in the CCC and make sure Save All Catalyst Control Center Settings is checked.

For Vista 32/64

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP 32/64

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.

Save the file, then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC. Done.

Copied and Pasted from UT3 forums, Enjoy

Bump!

It seems my stability problems still remain. Everything at stock, video card fan at 60%, games will still freeze after a random amount of time. Temperatures are not a problem, machine passes prime 95, memtest etc.... The only thing I can think of is that XP 64 is a pos. Any ideas?

Get rid of XP 64? I dislike vista but xp64 has very little support out there with games, drivers and programs so I went with Vista64. No problems at all with it besides the fact it uses up 1.8gigs of ram with all non essential services disabled.

I don't wanna go to Vista unless I really have to. So far, everything has had very recent drivers for XP 64. This sucks. I just got my new parts and got everything set up just the way I like it :(

just wondering if your Corsair 520HX is juicy enough for the card.

I have an Antec NeoHE 500, i was afraid i have to buy another PSU. luckily no weird screen, or sudden shut of just yet.

I just tried the ATI tray tools v1.5.8.1250

it let you set fan speed at certain temperature

My psu is on the recommended list on ATi's site for the card, besides that, my processor is pretty tiny in energy requirements, I am pretty confident that my psu is not near it's limit.

Bump!

It seems like other people have the exact same issue I am having. My screen turns to cubes and stuff first and then it freezes up usually.

http://forums.amd.com/game/mes...AR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

http://www.tomshardware.com/fo...33-4870-make-crash#bas

Lots of people have done all kinds of things to try and fix the problem and still no fix. People have tried multiple OSes and all that on completely rock solid systems and still have the issue. I am going to hold off on changing OS since it looks like it isn't the problem. I hope AMD releases a hotfix. Looks like it is a Sapphire problem :(

I was gonna ask what brand of card you have. Did you ever get a fix for the problem? Has it been confirmed that its only Sapphire 4870's?

Vista 64 is creamy smooth. Go to it as soon as possible, grasshopper.

This is a good thread. Posting so I can recapture some of the valuable tips when I get back to my desktop in a couple of days. I have a 4850, I doubt that would matter too much. That card is HOT.
