how far can cats-5 go before the signal is lost?

The spec is 100 meters: 90 meters of solid conductor with up to 5 meters of stranded (jumper) at each end.

This is the guideline from the EIA/TIA. If you have the proper test equipment you can extend the length somewhat, within the electrical budget set forth in the standards.
