Cat 3 vs Cat5e for DSL

I need to install a separate jack for my new ADSL service. Will using UTP Cat5e over Cat3 have any advantage? I will terminate into a keystone.

No difference, but ironically CAT3 is more expensive than CAT5E by almost double. It is all about supply and demand. I much prefer terminating cat3 for voice drops but my supply is getting low.

Remember that your DSL is comming in to your house over wire that was most likely installed when your house was built. Using something up to date for the last 30 feet compared to the thousands of feet laid down years ago won't help much.

The feeder wire into my house looks fairly recent (but who knows about the other 8000 ft back to the CO. It's a big wire with 10 pairs inside that comes into the house. Looks like the previous occupant had a lot of phone lines because there are 5 NIDs on the wall plus the old 50s style one that's not used.

The run from the MPOE to the jack will be roughly 80 ft.

I'm told that I'm on the edge for 6/1 Mbps ADSL2+ service.

Use whatever you have, cat3 cat5 cat6 it won't make a bit of difference on voice/dsl. That 8000 feet is the determining factor.

^^ This is it. You can use CAT1 (ie flat cable or 4 color 2 line phone cord) just fine if you wanted.

I actually have 600 ft of Cat3 and 566 ft of Cat5e which is why I asked.

I will use the Cat5e since that will make the run a bit more versatile.
