God damn it, why can't we just turn Cuba into a vacation spot already? Much closer than Hawaii and cheaper.

it should become a gambling resort for americans / free place for cubans
think about it - a short boat trip to a beachside las vegas

lots of tourism money = better cuba

for cubans, more money into the government = better infrastructure, etc.

Closer if you're on the east coast maybe... :|

wasnt it the lavish casinos and hotels that catered to the Americans on top of the coruption of public officials vs. the slums of the average man that enabled commies to rise to power in the first place

yup.

Cuba will stay on its current course unless the US "intervenes" somehow.

Slowly, very slowly, we can get back to the good old days of Batista and the big sugar companies.

The US can't intervene directly (as that would mean they'd suddenly have to count Guantanamo Bay as US territory, with US laws applying), so instead they have to find someone willing to take power and keep it (with US help) and install a pro-US dictator that way. Which basically would mean the people are not much better off, the only difference is that the US will then probably lift the boycot.

I'm sure lots of people dream to vacation in a harsh dictatorship. Just gotta be like the Canadians and Europeans!

That is exactly what Cuba would have been if Castro hadn't come along. American developers invested billions in Cuba in the 50s to make that happen, got the US govt to back Castro's revolution (via an arms embargo against the Cuban army, while the CIA supplied arms to Castro at the same time) because he promised to reinstate democracy and free markets once Bastista was gone, and then Castro doublecrossed the US, implemented a dictatorship, nationalized all US-owned property in Cuba, and pretended to adopt communism so he could get backing from the Soviet Union.

Between Castro and Kosovo, there shall be plenty of foreign policy fodder for the upcoming debates. Plenty of room for slip ups and spinning. Not that 95% of Americans could find Kosovo on a map, since many can't find America on a map, or even answer a question about Americans being unable to find America on a map.
