My friend is looking to find a Castle type of building game with good graphics where you build your castle and then defend it.
He has tried Stronghold but doesn't like it and there were some old games which came close but didn't quite meet his expectations (he's very picky with his games).

Any ideas on a game that might fit this description?

Rampart was fun in the arcade. I tried it with MAME, but it's just not the same without the trackball.

May not be what your friend is looking for though.

Heh I think he's looking for something a bit more up to date, preferribly with good graphics and gameplay.
I don't know what to tell him cause I am not into this type of game like he is.

Any other ideas?

let me check the web.... i remember a real old school maxis game i think

EDIT:
oh its Interplay - they came out w/Castles, Castles II and some add-ons. Oddly enough, I dont know why the hell I remembered it, but I remember looking at a computer game catalog like 10 years ago and seeing it. haha I can still see the screen shot in my head. Funny how that thing works

Age of Empires II? :p You can build as many castles as you want and defend it. :D

That Ballerburg game that was linked looks fairly decent. Maybe he will like that. I wonder if it's been released yet (it says Nov 02).

Heh AOE II is a game that he's been playing for awhile now and he want something different, but it's a good answer.

Thanx all, if there are any other ones you can think of, let me know.

Medieval: Total War has castle assaults (and I think defense) and grand army battles. Castle building is done in the abstract by upgrades (you can't dig moats, set battlements, etc.).

I'm actually the fella that Maverick007 is talking about :)

I read through all the posts and there are some good suggestions. Stronghold has almost everything I'm looking for in a great castle genre type game except 2 things:
1. I want to be able to build up my castle, then go off an invade other computer/people's castles.
2. Be able to take over other counties/lands in a 'Risk' style domination. The games Castles 1 & 2, and Lords of the Realm 2 were like this.

I haven't played Medieval: Total War yet, but the reviews seem to suggests this is very close to what I'm looking for. Perhaps I'm wrong but it doesn't look like you can actually build/defend your own castle in the game. My dream game would combine the castle sim building of Stronghold and the world domination aspect of Medieval: Total War. :)

Oh well, I was hoping you were a hardcore programmer who could write his own castle building game. :)

So consider this your inspiration, learn Windows game programming, and we'll all be glad to beta test it
