casting/mirroring HBO Max to Roku TV

One of my friends has a Roku TV and loves superhero movies. He is paralyzed from the waist down, and doesn't get out a lot. I was hoping I might be able to go over to his place once in a while and cast or mirror a movie from HBO Max over to his Roku TV.

So far, we've been unsuccessful. We WERE able to set up the Moto G Pure phone (got it & started using it about 4 months ago) so that it would get on his WIFI when I'm over there, because I believe that's required in order to cast or mirror video over to a TV. Using a pin that was generated, we were able to successfully cast Youtube video from my phone over to the TV.

Unfortunately, I have had no success at all in casting HBO Max to the Roku TV. We never see the "cast" symbol on the phone's screen when we play a movie or TV show on the HBO Max app. I have no problem at all getting the movie to play on the phone with no problems - the trouble is in then getting the movie that is playing to display on the Roku TV.

Anyone have a lot of experience casting or mirroring a phone's screen to a Roku TV? Thanks in advance for any help!

I have some experience with this, it is super easy to do only one prompt to make it happen. The device needs to be on the newer side to avoid buffering. My 2016 iPad buffers occasionally when screen mirroring, my iPhone 8 does not. I think it has something to do with the Wi-Fi chip in the device. My phone consistently gets higher speeds on Wi-Fi vs my iPad.

Is HBO Max not available on Roku directly? You could just log in with your credentials when you're there and log out when you leave. Alternatively, if you have your own streaming box/stick just take that with you when you're over at his house. I do that when I go on vacation.

It is available on Roku directly, but the account owner only allows me to install on something that I own. I am not allowed to share the password with others or install on something that I do not own, so I am restricted to either casting or mirroring the screen in order to temporarily put the video on the Roku TV. So far, no success. I've tried the casting numerous times, so I think my focus going forward may be trying to do screen mirroring.

Can you try a USB-C to HDMI cable and just plug it in? They are maybe $10 on Amazon...

Huh, I hadn't even thought of connecting with a wire - I'll definitely keep that in mind as a backup if I can't get it to work. So far, I haven't even been able to get my phone to "see" my roku TV at home, either, - and I was trying to follow instructions specific to my exact phone..... I will try again when I have some more time after work today.

Man, it must be hard to cast to a Roku TV! I've tried following the express instruction for the Moto G Pure. It SOUNDS pretty simple - go to settings, connected devices, preferences. Go to connection preferences, cast. Trouble is, even though both the phone AND the Roku TV are on the same wifi network, both logged in, the Moto G Pure phone just doesn't see our Roku TV.

Strangely enough, I WAS able to get what I was watching on Youtube on the Moto G Pure to show up on the Roku TV screen just fine, so it is possible to do this sort of thing in Youtube. I just can't seem to get the Android phone to see the Roku TV in the list of devices to cast to, nor can I seem to cast video to the TV when in HBO Max.

I would buy a chromecast device. They are cheap and work perfectly. That's what I use for netflix and several other services like Angel studios, etc.

Success! I finally realized that the section of the casting choice was buried on page 3 of the settings. I looked at bottom of the screen, saw 3 dots, then swiped left, and saw the middle dot become selected. It STILL wouldn't see the Roku TV, but it was able to cast to my friend's Android Box (hooked up to the same TV) just fine.

And strangely enough, after I started casting a movie from the phone to the TV, I then turned the phone completely off, and waited for the video to stop. It didn't! So does casting only require the phone to be on the same network to initiate the video stream, but not to sustain it? I hadn't expected that.

wife and I watched a…..err…..French movie earlier and I was easily able to cast to my Roku. Had to enter a verification number but that was all and worked lag free.
