Cassette Tape to CD

Led Zeppelin

I could've sworn I saw a review in Maximum PC recently about a device for your PC that converts cassette tapes to CD. Does anyone own this hardware, and if so, how was the conversion process? I have a TON of cassette tapes that I would love to convert to CD since I don't have a tape player in my car anymore, but just don't know how to do it.

i saw a peripheral on a website that is a cassette player for your computer...the website was geekstuff.com or something like that...there was a link posted to the site with an antfarm a day or two ago...find that thread and you'll find what i'm talking about

just hook up your tape player to your "line in" on your computer. There are tons of software available, that can remove the hiss from the tape, and you can later rip/split the tracks.

What's the big deal here? Your sound card's input has an A/D. There is software out there that will take it directly to MP3, and free software to boot.

Alternately, you could download all of the songs in MP3 form and burn them to a CD. AFAIK this is legal if you already own the album.

Go find a Phish forum. I'm sure they have mastered the technique. I'd imagine they'd use a high end cassete deck with digital out that plugs directly into a PC though.

The reason I want to do this is not for music, it's for a bunch of tapes that were recorded as a kid where there's people recorded that are no longer with us, such as my dad and grandparents. I think this would make a great gift next Christmas as most of my siblings don't even know I have these tapes, they think they're long thrown away. Some of these tapes are close to twenty years old, it's funny listening to them.

Exactly... no need for special hardware...
