Cashing Checks

How do you know a check is good when you take it to your bank to deposit it?

You don't.

Depends on the bank. If they write you a check from your bank they know instantly. Otherwise it can take a day or two before it bounces or clears.

If the check is over a certain amount (I think $500 for mine) they will get on the phone with the other bank right then and there to verify funds. Oh, and thats a personal check, they don't do that for a business, payroll check.

1) Only accept a check from a person who you trust won't give you a bad check. That is your responsibility.

2) You can often ask the bank if the funds will clear before you cash it. You can't do this at all banks in all circumstances, but many times you can.
