Because you rather have 2 dimes? Holy fuck - why don't you just ask him to deposit a check for you while you are there.

;) :) :)

As someone who's worked as a cashier, don't be so quick to judge. After hours of taking people one after another, hitting 1 button, then counting out the amount of change the computer tells me, it becomes almost like auto-pilot. When someone mixes up the formula it takes a bit to turn my brain back on again.

I've made some mistakes myself. The oddest was one time I apparently gave this lady a bit more change then I should have. She comes into the store again like 20 minutes later, runs up to me and starts angrily explaining how I gave her a few cents extra. Then she just leaves, she didn't even return the extra change.

Don't get the asian thing...

What if the guy accidentally/assholishly gave 5.25 on a 1.06 bill

Counting up would be faster in most people's heads

What kind of asshole hands over $5.26 for a $1.06 bill?

Perhaps the kind that's capable of doing simple math without a calculator (or the use of his fingers and toes)??

Went to McD's one time, total came out to $4.55. I handed over a $5, told the kid to hold on, I knew I had a nickel (to make the change easier). He hit the buttons on the register as I pulled out the nickel....for me having paid $5.

It confused him to no end when I handed him the nickel, and told him to just give me two quarters in change. Yeah.......he could not grasp that $0.45 + $0.05 = $0.50.

What I would have done if I was that cashier was give you back 3 one dollar bills, 4 quarters, 2 nickels and 10 pennies.

Bullshit, you even refered to me as Sir and walked my order to my table. As a matter of fact I don't even recall paying.

fucking liar.

Making change has nothing to do with a knowledge of math. Some cashiers (good ones) have an innate ability to see patterns in change.

For instance 41 cents is not the number 41, it's one quarter, one dime, one nickel and one penny. There are lots of ways to arrive at 41 cents but, the above method is fastest because you use both hands at once accessing two different change bins.

I'm very fast and when I've had to cashier at some of the Universities I've worked at, my line was always the longest. Why? Because I was twice as fast as any other cashier.

I doubt there are many RainMan cashiers....

IMHO if your line was the longest, wouldn't you be the slowest?

You're getting hung up on math (or intelligence) versus making change. My line was always the longest because the regulars knew I was the fastest.
