at mcdonalds. i ordered a $1 mcdouble. $1.06 with tax. i give $5.26.

the high school aged looking kid accidently hits the $5 key so the register shows $3.94 as the change amount.
he then uses paper and pen to manually calculate the change and comes up with 4.75 :?:

i tell him its suppose to be $4.20. he shruggs his shoulders and gives me the $4.20

lutz and sadness at the school system at the same time :(

because op obviously had one quarter and penny

And now he's going to have two dimes.
I like quarters more than dimes.

5.01 would have gotten you back... far more coins.

You simply want to have as few coins as possible, eh?

Me, I see it as a minor loss of money now, a free bonus sometime in the year when my change jar is full. :)

I have to come do the math every so often if one of my coworkers presses the wrong buttons. :/ What do they teach in high schools?

I find sometimes that I need a second to think. I don't work quickly unfortunately. You walk up there you pull out the 5.26 and you've thought about how much change your receiving. It takes me a moment to think and you pestering me with whatever number you think it is does not help.

That's why you are taught to count up.

You don't need pencil and paper to realize that to go from 1.06 to 5.26 it's an increase of 4.20.

Still trying to figure out where 4.75 came from, but you can't be too hard on the kid, it was probably a pressure situation haha (slightly serious)

the problem is, is that the change is just sitting there, doing nothing, earning no return.

in contrast, one could take that change and earn a paltry 1% in the bank account. but hey, 1% is better than 0%.

i personally try to cash them in as frequently as i can, however i keep a small amount to use for change at the water machine when i fill up our 5gal jugs.

The register probably mistook the : ) Happy Meal key for a parenthesis.

What I would have done if I was that cashier was give you back 3 one dollar bills, 4 quarters, 2 nickels and 10 pennies.

But the Asian kids count down and they never fail in math. Counting up is part of why American cashiers are so slow.

Edit: BTW I should mention that you can be fast both ways. But I say part of why we fail at math is just because of the American education system. Even if we were taught to count down, I suspect a lot of failures too.

I gave exact change to a guy at the drive-thru a few weeks ago and he tried to give me back a dollar.

i used to work cashier at a few diff. places. my system, was never rely on electronics, completely.

i had a system setup to master the algorithm real fast in my head, and it would prove so useful in the event someone tried to rip me off and lie.

a little bit of studying goes a long way.

You mean addition and subtraction? Real hard to master there...

You'd think a kid like that would have intimate knowledge of the number 4.20.

I'll admit I'm one of these morons who can barely do basic math. Then again I never worked cash. This I could figure out though.

Acceptance of gay people and why illegal immigration is a good thing. Math skills? You won't need those where we're going.

I was in the store yesterday and the cashier had to manually add three reduced price items together that couldn't be scanned, 3x 67p. She had to ask what it was.

I worked walmart while in high school. i was a cashier and worked pets department. After an hour working as cashier you are so damn bored half the time i wouldn't pay attention to what the fuck i was doing. Unless you are a brainless twit the job is so boring it drives you nuts. i can't see how some people do it for years on end.

Getting back 4 singles and 2 dimes is better than getting back 3 singles and 94 cents worth of various change.

What kind of asshole hands over $5.26 for a $1.06 bill?

My grandfather did that all the time. You calling my dear, deceased grandpa an asshole? He served in WWII AND Korea!

Yeah - I worked in a grocery store for 4 years of HS as a cashier. Sucked big time. The only way to get through it would be to just let your mind wander. I can see why it sometimes takes cashiers a few seconds to figure out change if it is different - they have to snap back to reality.
