Go to NCIX.COM. It's in Vancouver and it's probably the best online store in Canada. I've bought tons of stuff from them. :)

The guys at www.mconcept.com in Vancouver are pretty reasonable. If you call for info, ask to talk to Harry. He generally does a pretty good job of meeting or beating prices if you find some lower than Micro Concept's advertised prices. Link

How do I go about getting a case in Canada if I'm in the US? I have a friend in Vancouver (I'm in Chicago) who said that she would paint a case for me. I figure that it would be cheaper to have her pick it up locally in Vancouver, paint it and then ship it to me rather than me mail ordering it and having it shipped to me and then to her.

Anyway.. What's the best way to have her go about buying a case in Canada? Should I have her go downtown Vancouver and pick one up? If she mail orders it, will she get out of paying GST/PST or whatever your taxes are? Do you think I would have a hefty import tax since it is being bought in Vancouver and shipped to the states?

Any help with this would be most appreciated! I just posted a message asking about this and here's a thread asking about places to buy cases in Canada. Doh! Well.. I haven't been to lucky with the search engine on this forum lately. ;)

TIA,

Sal

I forgot to ask about the current exchange rate. I've been multiplying the Canadian price by 62% to get the US price. Close enough? Also what is the tax rate in Vancouver?

Salvador, the rate is closer to 68% and she will have to pay the GST and PST for her purchase, if she orders out of province she will get out of paying PST but not GST. There is no tax when she ships it to you, unless your state imposes one at the border, you will also get hit with the brokerage fees (varies with the courier you use to cross the border)and any "taxes" your government levies for importing the case (if any).

Laz:

15% total tax rate with PST and GST? It looks like it would be cheaper for her to buy it in Vancouver at a B&M store. I'm sure that shipping will be more than GST if she has it shipped in from out of province.

I'm looking at about $120 US with Tax for the case that I want compared to around $101 US shipped here in the US.

Got any idea what it costs to send a case into Canada? You don't have to tell me shipping, but what I'm more concerned with is taxes or duty.

I'm probably splitting hairs here. It would just be easier to have her get the case, paint it and ship it to me. I think she has a buddy at Loomis anyway. ;)

I know what you mean about courier fees. I learned the hard way with UPS. I sent a $25 used motorcycle part to a guy in Toronto and UPS billed him $25 as a courier fee. It's always USPS if I send anything to Canada from now on.

Thanks again,

Sal

I think it would probably be cheaper to have her buy it, paint it, ship it to you, and then you pay her back at the end. That's the simplest solution I can come up with which is why I think it would be the least expensive. Vancouver is an awesome place to buy computer stuff so you could probably get almost any case you want for a good price.

Thanks. I'm going to have her buy an Antec 1030 or 1040 case for me. If she's going to paint it, I guess it doesn't matter which color I go with.

If you are from the Vancouver area, which is the best place to buy an Antec case?

Thanks again,

Sal

Onvia is a good general hardware store in Canada - I haven't shopped them specifically for cases though. Since they have offices in Seattle and Vancouver, their prices are the same once you do the dollar conversion. And it means you can use Pricewatch to compare their prices. I hadn't heard about the other Canadian stores mentioned here - guess I'll be checking them out!

Another place you might want to look if you want a premium case is Tweakbox - I'm thinking of getting a LianLi case from them - they're Canadian...

I just checked out NCIX.com. Is it customary to have about 5 different prices for the same case on your web site depending on where you look? I think I'll have to call to make sure that they have the Antec SX1030B and see what the actual price is.

I think I'm going with this place because it's close (Burnaby) to where the girl I know lives. I don't want her to have to drive into downtown Vancouver when she lives in Maple Ridge.

If anyone has a better place to pick up the Antec SX1030 or 1030B in the Vancouver burb's let me know. I swore that I saw this case last night on the NCIX site for $155 Canadian and now I can't fine it for less than $163. It's not a big deal, but after tax, this case is going to be about $30 US more than what I'd be able to get it for mail order in the states.

Thanks,

Sal
