Case & PSU for under $40 USD

Hello,

I am building a mid-range gaming rig for a friend, and am looking for a case.

The system is a Athlon 64 3000+ w/ 6600GT PCIe video card.

Has budget has room for a $35 to $40 case and PSU. Are there any quality units in the price range (Shipped), or he stuck with whatever I can find on Pricewatch?

Thanks,

David

Not really, the PSUs in most of those are crap - sometimes you can catch a really good deal on places like http://www.dumpinggoods.com or on eBay but you have to be ready to pounce when the good stuff shows up. Snooze - lose!
. Some of the cheapest case/PSU combos that are halfway decent are the Athenatech A600 or A747 series (both have Sparkle's budget line PSUs) and the Evercase 42x2 series (which is the guts of the Asus Vento case). Newegg carries some of both. Remeber, the PSU is critical in the operation of the PC. If you let him buy cheap - it will land on your head, even though it was his choice to go cheap...

I bought a case for $15 shipped from buy.com a few weeks back it's a decent case, nothing special of course but good enough for my sister.

OK, so if I want to go for a cheap case and a good PSU, what would be a recomended combo?

Again, trying to keep it under $40-$60 shipped total.

Thanks,
David

I have been looking for a couple of days for you and cannot find anything in that price range that is decent.

You should really try to talk the guy into a good power supply...It is after all the heart of any system...It really makes no sense to spend the money for a A 64 AMD and 6600GT and try to power it with an inexpensive power supply.

Reciepe for disaster...In my humble opinion anyway.

As I said before, the Athenatech A600 is one of the best for the cheap bucks. "One can lead a horse to water, but one can't make him drink..." The Blue and Silver models of the A605 have an instant rebate on Newegg - makes the shipped total about $62.25. Looks good too if you like that kind of thing - a more sedate A601 is about $2. more. They have Sparkle budget line PSUs (Power Q ATX-350GU)...

Here, have a  !

make him spend at least $100 on the two, and if he refuses, make sure he knows the blame is on him when the whole thing goes down.
