Case Modding FAQ

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a good resource to review before I try to add my first side panel fan?

I have a Razorfish full tower aluminum case (Lian Li built for Best Buy) which doesn't have a lot of cooling. My Radeon 4850 512MB card heats up and gives me a VPU error when playing Crysis and on rare occasions, when playing CoD4.

The case has a side fan sitting "above" the graphics card to suck heat out the back, but I can't feel any air movement from it at all. I don't think it is very effective. I have the stock 120MM fan up front and a S-Flex 1600 RPM exit fan.

My thought was to remove the ineffective side fan and add a fan on the side panel to blow directly on the graphics card. I was assuming that I'd get a 120MM S-Flex like my exit fan, but I haven't researched the aerodynamics of this at all.

What tools should I use? I've seen a youtube video of a guy using a jig saw. I guess I'd need a special blade to do that.

Any tips or links to FAQs would be appreciated.

Thanks Tullphan,

Should I be concerned about air flow? This shouldn't disrupt air flow negatively, would it?

A hole saw is the most efficient, dremel works pretty well, never used a jigsaw.

The actual name of your case is Rocketfish, do a search for rocketfish mods and you'll get some other good ideas.

EDIT: a hole saw is, however, pretty expensive if you're only planning on using it once. Not many more applications you can use it for. If you mod cases a lot, might be worth it.

zagood: Thanks for the correction on the case name; I was at work when I posted. It is almost comical that I can't remember that name. I was calling it something else the other day.

So if I don't want to use the hole saw, what would be my next best option?

A 4-1/2" hole saw attachment (the size you'll need for a 120mm fan) for your power drill is around $35.
Granted, you can get a dremel for that price, this will be quick & easy. And if you decide to add a radiator, etc. later, you'll be set for that too. 🙂
