I've been shopping around b/c while my A7n8x-d is "in the shop" i have to use my parents pc and now i realize a pentium 233 with 32 megs of ram is hideous....

so i decided to do a lowcost upgrade for them

i'm gonna salvage the floppy, hdd (its a 20 gig i added to replace the 2 gig...), and burner (again I added that a while ago)

this pc will get about as much use as the internet and microsoft word can push it, so i'm going prettymuch integrated with everything (sans modem which will be a winmodem...) even the videocard.

now i initially though "athlonxp!" but as i'm looking around a celeron seems to be a wiser choice $$$$ wise (especially since newegg doesn't have decently priced Athlons that are RETAIL)

Note- I'm really not a Intel Guru so If i made really stupid mistakes please point it out. also, i would prefer a amd package...but i don't think i can fit it in price wise

Here is what I got:

on the case though the 12v rail has only 10 Amps. I'm not too worried since its a celeron...but i have no idea if celerons draw power from the 12vrail like athlon XPs....anyone care to enlighten me?

but the cost was too great and it took me over 200....there were 35 dollar 128 meg sticks but.....

I was thinking of using the ram in the current pc. I have 2 128meg sticks of pc100 ( i bought pc100 way back when thinking "in the future i won't have to buy faster sticks of ram!" :p ) and am wondering if i can use that because I know that for the average user they won't notice that extra two seconds or so...

thanks...

actually the computer i was replacing was a HP Pavilion 8240 and it seems the case can be used if I pop a new mobo since this thing was way back when computer companies had to keep revising earnings up, etc... and they didn't custom tailor the peices together....

would it be better if i kept that case and got a psu + ram instaed/

i'd go with a newer psu just to be safe with that P4. Yes it is basically a stripped down P4 you're gonna be running. A slow P4

does the Hp run PC133? If so you could save the dough on the memory and get the Gigabyte Gigabyte GA-8LS533

it uses PC133 memory which is more than fast enough to do internet stuff and MS office.

stripped down p4? never thought of it that way...though to use proper terminology we should call it Neutered instead

hehe...the HP i'm talking about runs on an old socket7 (not even super7...) motherboard

i doubt it'd have much use for pc133

but the thing is I don't have pc133 - just pc100

Why not go with: (newegg)
- p3-celeron 1.1a for $41 (plenty fast for Word!) -or- 1.2a at $44, 1.3a at $48 if you insist
- ECS P6STMT mATX sock370 for $48
- Crucial 256MB 32Meg x 64 PC133 SDRAM $41

you give up the AGP slot and a little speed, but save $45.
