Case Management: Tubing

HI All,

What sort of tubing/shrinkwrap/etc would you guys use for your case wiring jobs?

I would prefer to buy from a large retailer (such as www.svc.com).

I will be using the P180 and the Seasonic S12-500W.

Sata cabling for everything else.

I buy my stuff here, but then again, they are 20 minutes drive away. I'd suggest going to Frozen CPU or Performance PCs.

You can get tubing for cheap @ fry's. I buy my sleeving kits @ performance-pcs.

What Width of the wrappings should I be looking at? 1/2" 3/4" 1/4" 1/8th?

If you are talking about the sleeving, the kits come with different sizes. If you are talking about the tubing, they have 1/4,1/2,3/4 and 1" ... I just bought all sizes on the tubing, they are dirt cheap. If you are talking about the sleeving though, I would recommend getting different heatshrink, the stuff that comes with a kit is crap.

They are pretty cheap so I guess I will buy some various sizes once I decide what I want...

The tubing is very easy and cheap and nice, but the sleeving looks better. Sleeving also is PITA to work with. What are you going to be sleeving? If it's the Seasonic, definitly get a sleeving kit. But I'll tell you right now, the 20pin is not fun.

I am not so worried about the nicety of it but I am more concerned with ease of use (think tubing would be better here) and airflow.

Granted it is quite expensive.

If I go the tubing route would heatshrink tubing be a good idea or just stick with the normal stuff?

I have no idea about that stuff, looks easy though. The tubing I linked you to @ fry's is basically the same thing except looks different. It has a slit in the tubing so you can just open it and put your wires in there, but imo you would want a sleeving kit for a PSU.

Once done it didn't look to bad, but using the cheap sleeving kit from SVC was more work than should have been necessary. The monofilement sleeving wants to unravel if not melted at the cut, then some of the melted bits have to be poped open again to open the sleeve to get it on. Then it is heat sensitive to a heat gun set on low. The shrink tubing provided is low end stuff and really doesn't work as well as the good products out there. I have used heat shrink for many years doing heavy equipment repair, so this is not shooting from the hip. My aim is true. These cheap kits will work but i sure don't like them.
But it does come in colors.....Weeee!

My next sleeve job will be done with fiberglass covered sleeving and 3M heat shrink.
The sleeving is carbon black with a white tracer line. action-electronics.com. Total cost, about
$20. Get a large Molex pin removing tool, thier $8 model is OK. Action also has a chart for sizing the sleeve to the number/AWG of wires.
This job will look much better than the last, but it will be in black not blue.

In time due to heat and such duct tape will get all sticky and is actually not fun to replace if you have to!

Not around heat. Use gaffer tape. 150ft rolls are only $20.
