Case-Front Connections & Sound Cards

I haven't bought/used a sound card for several years, so I'm ignorant.

I've come to rely on the case front connectors I have for both headphones and mic. I need that auto signal switch--When I plug phones in, it cancels the rear signal to my stereo.

If I get a sound card, and disable onboard audio, can I still use the mobo-case connections, or can I connect the sound card directly to the case (and retain the above features)? Or neither? Thanks.

I can't speak for all soundcards, but my Audigy card does not all for any front case connections...they only allow for you to use their creative product which goes into your 5 1/4 drive slot. It seems like the newer creative cards are the same way, you have to buy their proprietary device to get front of case connections (ie..the platinum version of the cards). My onboard soundcard does allow it, however.

That's crappy. I have a slot open, but don't necessarily want to waste it on that when I already have the jacks I need.
