case fan

Is cutting a hole in the top of the case for a fan a good idea. I haven't see one on the web. To me it makes sense, heat rises. And for dust seeping in whent the comp is off, you could put a filter on top.

What are the downsides to this idea?

unbalanced case pressure? since your adding another fan to your case.
there isn't really much of a downside to it

I meant the top fan would be my only exhaust, no rear fan. I could have intakes on the front and sides and maybee th rear. The top could have more than one exhaust.

Then you are just bringing in air to be heated but not giving it an escape route. Your making a pressure cooker. Balance my friend. Balance.....

Yes, it makes sense. Several cases now come with "blowholes" as they're called. Coolermaster and Lian Li are just a couple of manufacturers that incorporate the idea into their case.

The top fan(s) are the escape route. Anyway, usually the back and if you have one, the top fans are exhaust and front/side fans are intake. Go for it, worst that happens is you put things back the way they were before. Well, except for the circular 80mm hole in the top of your computer.
