ive got 4 80mm case fans all of which came without a tail/connector on them.
Ive spliced these wires (red and black) onto the wires (yellow and black) supplying power to my HDD and cdroms.
IS this going to do any harm to these components or my PSU? Is there a better way to wire these fans that is fairly simple to do?

It sounds like what you did was fine as long as its a 12 volt fan. A neat way to take care of this problem in another way is to buy or create a device known as a fanbus.
For info check out

just make sure your PS can handle those fans, that's it.

there is no problem, just make sure you did not short anything out.

if everything appears to be fine now, well, double check, and pray :p

cliff's site is a good idea, if you want to do something like that. you can purchase a fanbus from cliff also, but he did say he stopped making custom ones, but will continue supplying places like http://www.2cooltek.com with the same one he always has. 2cool rocks, and so does cliff.
