Case fan positioning for optimum airflow

Assuming a standard mid-tower, what is the best placement of fans, both blowing in and extracting to maximise airflow?

I would assume that fans blowing in at the bottom whilst extracting fans are placed at the top would be most effective as the warm air will rise. Is this correct?

Also what fans are recommended?
