I am trying to buy some case fans for my new computer, I know the size and everything, but I am confused about the 3 pin/4 pin part. Does it depend on the motherboard I am going to get? (which will be the Epox 8k7a) Thanks
4 pin is the connector you stick in you HD, and 3 pin is the connector you stick in you Floppy... They(the 3 pin) use the power headers from your motherboard.... I would stick to 4 pin, there have been isolated cases of 3 pin burning out a power header on a motherboard, or even burning out the entire motherboard... Why take a chance....
In any case, your motherboard will not have more than 4 fan headers, in most cases, 2 or 3. one needs to be used for the heatsink's fan, so that it can be monitored. It is a good idea to pull as small a load as possible through the motherboard, and offload most of your power drain to the PSU. The motherboard has one power in from the power supply and needs to supply ram, chips and the processor. Throwing 15 watts more of power drain isn't going to help the motherboard.
