so, i just installed my watercooling system, but:

a) my case is is still louder than i'd like it to be
b) the water going through my hoses isn't exactly cold whenever i touch the hose

what fans do people suggest i get (both for the front 120mm fan and for the 120mm radiator fan)?

my case is a lian li v1000

Use Yate Loon 120mm/80mm case fans. They're are very quiet and cheap. Replace all your fans inexpensively. Yate Loons are a unknown secret until demand goes up.

120mm Panaflo M1A with a fan controller gives you a broad selection of noise-vs-flow settings, from noisy 86 CFM @ 12V to silent 36 CFM @ 5V.

Hope this helps!

I second the Panaflo comment. I actually bought the 100 CFM 120mm model, and even that at about half speed pushes major air with only a low whooshing sound. Added the highest speed 92mm Panaflo to the back of my case, and these two fans replaced the four fans I had previously (mostly generics). Combined with a $15 fan controller (the fans were like $12 each or so), I now have a case that's 10c cooler, and subjectively about half as loud.

I will probably never buy another brand of fan again in my life. I've had them for a year now, and unlike the cheapo fans I used to get, they haven't gotten loud from dust getting in the bearings. Very high quality. Can't say enough good things about them. The http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813999505]$16 Vantec fan controller[/url] is also highly recommended if you choose to buy the high CFM Panaflos (probably any high CFM fan, in fact).

Panaflo L or M1A/X is a good choice. A even better choice would be this Delta; its one of the quietest ball bearing fans I've heard, and noticeably better then the 120mm Panaflos.

To reduce the noise run the fans (at least your exhaust / radiator fan) off the motherboard fan headers so you can control their speed based on CPU and/or system temp for better control then any manual fan controller.

i think part of the reason why the hoses were warm was because i had the radiator fan plugged into the cpu fan headers. i changed them to go to the fan 2 headers and there's a significant difference. i feel the hoses now and they're cold. my cpu is running at 23C :)

Yate Loon, Nexus, Delta, Panaflow, Scythe, Arctic Cooling (I think I'm right on this, correct if otherwise), all make great fans.

You're not satisfied with that? What's the ambient temp?

i already posted that i didn't have the fan on the right headers... before i corrected the error, the water in the pipes was warm. so, at that time, no, i wasn't satisfied. now that i changed the fan assignment from cpu fan to fan 2, i'm happy with that.

the fans are still loud, though... and i'd still like to see if i can force more air into the radiator for better cooling :)

can you post what your w/c rig consists of?

there's a big diff when using rads or heater cores.

eg. I'm using a 2-342 single pass heater core and 2 120mm blue led Yate loons on a Cool Drive 6. They also on a 1.75" acrylic shroud. I probably should be using stronger fans but I don't want noise. I may go to a BIP2 if my single pass doesn't get me the temps I want.

also, the coolant will never be cooler than ambient. if that's what you want then you'll have to go Phase Change. Is 23C your load or idle? what program are you using for getting your temps?

also, you may want to be careful when running 120mm fans like high power delta, sunon, san ace and the like on your mb headers. I know the 3 blade deltas will blow your mb if you're using them on the headers. The amps are way too high. It's best to run them on a fan bus or you can try 7V or 5V them. You may get motor hum as some fans run quieter than others when undervolting.

I personally love my Yate Loon 120s. I won't go back to any others. When run full blast they're way quieter than any other LED 120 I've heard..even tho they may not be the best suited for rads/heatercores.

Also, look at the new GlobalWin NCB 120mm fans at SVC. I used them for like 10min and they are very quiet and have good cfm. I wanted LED's on my acrylic shroud so I went with the Yate's.

you don't seem to understand... i'm fine with the 23 idle temp. that's not the issue anymore since i changed the rad fan from the cpu fan headers to the fan 2 fan headers. I'M FINE WITH THE IDLE TEMP.

anyways, what's the difference between yate loons and panaflo?

i have a swiftech apogee on the cpu and a black ice extreme radiator.

From the sound of it, you have your fans blowing through the radiator. Reinstall them such that the fans suck air through the radiator.

Are you using the motherboard to adjust the fan speed?

1st thing you said:
i was going to, but then i realized that i don't have an intake to the motherboard compartment. i only have an intake to the hard drive and psu compartment. so, my best bet for cool air through the radiator would be to suck it in. the case is perforated, so the sucked in air has an easy escape.

2nd thing you said:
no, i'm pretty sure it's just running at a constant speed.

Just try it and let me know what the temps are.

Besides, you could always rig up a 120mm fan in the front drive bays, right?

EDIT: What fans are you using?

23c idle is pretty low. your room must be pretty cool.

bix 2 or 3?

there's lots of forums that you can find out what fans are best suited sound wise for your bix.
try 7v your fans if you want them quieter then check your temps to see how much higher it'll be.

yate loons don't have as high cfm but are very quiet..but again 'quiet' is subjective so some may think Panas are quiet.
