Just bought a new ECS k7s5a, athlon 1ghz, ddr. I also have an overclocked radeon le, so its a big heat producer. I used to run my case witht he sides off, and i never had temp probs, but i'm getting tired of seeing it open all the time. I'm looking for a quiet setup, but i have to be able to run the case closed, and it has to be a safe, eliable temp. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything.

A blowhole in the top of the case, over the cpu works quite well for me. It dropped CPU temp about 7 °C, if you add an intake fan also it will probably be even lower. And finally maybe another fan in the side of the case to blow on the OC radeon. That should keep things cool enough.

Its really the radeon that i'm most concerned about....the comp would lock when i was using 3d intensive stuff witht he case closed....so the fan near the radeon, should it be an intake or a exhaust?

or should I stick a fan in the fan cage at the front of the case and have it blow towards the slots, and out the holes where i dont have cards?

I think it's more like your athlon that's doing the locking. I have a athlon 900 here and ever since I got voodoo 5, I get extra heat from the board + block my air flow of the case.

Before I had 1 intake case fan, Power Supply fan, and YS TECH fan for my thermoengine because I hate noise. Now I had to put a delta fan on the athlon and added 1 out take fan. It got rid of my locking with my voodoo 5 that's overcooked at 190mhz. It's not that loud but still my system was silient before.

Make the one in the bottom-front of your case your intake fan, the one on top exhaust and the one in the side also intake.
That way the air will pass along your cards and then rise up to the top of the case (hot air rises) where it will be extracted by the top fan.
Don't open up unused slotcovers in the back because they'll make the air from the intake fan go right back out. If you want you can also add one extra exhaust in the back but 3 should be enough allready.

sounds good, phalanx...i'll close up my slots and look into it. What do you think of a 120mm panaflo on top, and two 80mm's as the intakes (front bottom and side) coupled with a pc mod BayBus? i think the three would be great for intensive use, but the comp stays on a lot and i think i should probably be able to get away with one or two fans activated at idle.

A 120 mm topfan might be a bit large to fit in the top. I have a midi case and my PSU and CDrom were in the way so the largest I could fit was 80 mm in the top. But if you have a larger case and have the room why not.
How hot does your CPU run with your case closed now ?

you know, i dont think I explained that well enough. the locking I was referring to was using a duron-800, i just upgraded and i'm waiting for my ath to come. My case is pretty spacious, but looking at it now, it would be a tight squeeze. Anyway, my mobo said the duron was running at 81 F.

Only 81 F that's just 27 °C which is very good. So I doubt the locking was because of your CPU, that leaves the Radeon.
How high is it OC'ed and do you have a good enough heatsink on that ? My CPU runs 37 °C (98 F) idle and 45 °C (113 F) full load with only the top exhaust fan and a HD cooler that sucks in a little air. Before I installed the fan my temps were about 42 °C (107 F) idle and about 50 °C (122 F) full load. This is my system.

the LE is o/c'd to 183/183, which really puts out the heat. I havent gotten around to replacing the stock heatsink, but is it possible to just screw a little fan onto the radeon's HS and get better cooling that way?

So that's a 38 MHz overclock which makes your LE identical to the normal Radeon right ? I also read the following in a review by Anandtech : "On our Radeon LE card, a simple click of the mouse in PowerStrip allowed us effortlessly bring the Radeon LE's clock speed from 148MHz up to 183MHz without any problems. In fact, the Radeon LE's passive cooling system was sufficient enough to make the card stable as a rock at these high speeds."
So if it worked for them why doesn't it work for you ?? Maybe because of poor airflow in your case ?
So I think if you solve that problem you don't need an extra fan on the HS, but you can allways do so anyway.

i think it is the airflow...seeing as i have none:) ok, will do. Thanks for everything!
