Hello everyone,
I am about to embark on my first ever system build. I was hoping to sound you all out on a recommendation for a case and a power supply.
For starters, I'll have the following components:
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
A64 3000+
2x512 Corsair PC-3200 Value Memory
Leadtek 6600GT video card (non-extreme version)
One CD/DVD drive
One hard drive, probably Seagate 7200rpm 8MB 160GB
Speakers, probably Logitech Z-640 5.1
Mouse, keyboard, monitor (probably LCD)
Possibly a floppy drive (can I get away with not having one?)
I do not plan on overclocking immediately, but I would like to have enough power for overclocking at a later date if I choose to, and/or to upgrade the processor. I'd also like to have enough spare power to upgrade my video card some day, or to add in another 6600GT and SLI them, or possibly to upgrade and SLI. I'd also like to have power to spare to add in an extra hard drive or two, and maybe another optical drive.
I have really no idea how to go about gauging how much power I'll need, and that's really my biggest question for you all. How can I calculate how much power I'll need for various configurations?
For the case, I could go either mid- or full-tower. ZZF has the Antec Sonata case plus a 380W supply for about ninety bucks this week. Do people have anything against that case, and , if so, what? Also, will 380 Antec watts be enough for the system specced above? Will it be enough for me down the road? And does that Antec 380W supply fit well with the Asus board, connector-wise?
I'm also tempted by the Antec 480W NeoPower supply, and I'd guess that'd surely be enough for me now. Would it still be enough down the road, though? And, in that case, I'll need to hear opinions on other cases. I don't want flashing lights, spaceship parts, or monster skulls on the case. I want something elegant and not at all flashy.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
