My PSU is about 1 inch away from my hsf for cpu. Can the location of this unit effect how my temp is reading. If I was to get a bigger case would my cpu temp go down or stay about the same.

CPU 43
Case 33

XP 2800 @ stock speeds

Thanks

Depends on the PSU.
If it's a quality PSU and it blows out all the hot air that the PSU generates it's good.
If it sucks air from the CPU, it's good.

If the air inside the PSU is stagnent or slow flowing, move it further away from the CPU.
If you modded your PSU and have it blowing into the computer, get a brain.

If you have something like the Thermaltake Silent PurePower 480W, it should lower your CPU temps a fair bit since the exhaust fan on it is a monster when cranked up. Lotsa exhaust.

For the case fan question, it depends on how many case fans you currently have. If you only have 1, or dont' have one, another one will probably help.

Most mid-size boxes position the power supply pretty much in the same place, but the ATX-2 standard does include an intake on the bottom of a power supply, and you will find that many 350 watt and upward psu's include a second fan that increases that bottom side opening's airflow intake.

Those are low temperatures. Have you compared idle vs. high activity (loaded) temps? I have a Thoroughbred A cpu that runs slightly cooler, but the MB it's in thinks it's slower than it is, and won't run it any faster than an older, slower Palomino would have gone. Right next to that one is a Thoroughbred B that runs hotter than yours, and is really not that different from the first one named, save for the second fan on the first one's psu, and it's a Powmax case, one of the cheapest cases that there are.

Both have a single 80 mm exhaust fan beneath the psu. One or the other may have an 80 mm intake fan in front of the hard drive bays (or maybe not). Both are the so-called mid-tower size, about 16 to 17" tall, with four 5 1/4" optical drive bays. Pretty much the industry average size. Is yours any smaller than these two?

If your PSU or case fan has significant flow and your HSF fan blows into the HS, one or the other or both may scavenge enough air to 'starve' the HSF's fan. There are ducts you can get to bring outside air directly to the HSF fan which will avoid this 'starving' effect. Computergate has one on sale right now for ~$6. and there are much fancier duct kits for under $20. that include air guides, adapter plates, etc. The Computergate one is very simple but effective.
