CAS2 ram vs more CAS2.5, which would you choose?

Currently I have 256MB of Corsair XMSPC3200C2. I'm running it at DDR380mHz, timings of 2-2-2-4. I have no complaints about it, other than the fact that it's only 256mb... I need at least 512 I feel.

Unfortunately, I don't have unlimited funds and am trying to decide what will give me the best performance for my dollar...

So, I have a few options...

I can stick it out and just buy another 256MB stick to match it, which looks like it will cost me about 130CAD

I can sell it and buy 512MB of Kingston HyperX PC3000, but it's the older stuff that is only rated for CAS2.5, but I'll only be out 70 bucks or so... which would let me maybe buy another 256MB of this to make up for the speed deficit.

The thing that's making me think about buying more slower ram over less faster is that the maximum performance difference in between CAS2 and CAS2.5 is supposed to be 10%... Now I mainly use my computer for gaming, and I'm thinking that the extra ram that's 10% slower is a hell of a lot better than virtual memory on my hard drive...

Am I thinking in good directions or am I way off base here? When I was mainly playing CS this wasn't an issue, but now that I like other games too I'm not sure that 256MB is gonna cut it much longer.

What OS are you using. If you are using the Win9x series. 128MB is the sweet spot of price/performance. 256MB is like adding the salt & pepper to your meal. It will taste better, but that is all. No real gains.

However if you are using WinXP, more memory from my gathering is better. But I refuse to ever come close to buying that POS. Buy some XMS PC3000 memory though. According to Thugs, it works better than XMS PC3200 or PC3500. And it wont break your wallet as much 🙂.

go with twinmos/winbond or twinmos/twinmos

no need to waste money on expensive corsair (they use winbond as welll... the exact same winbond bh-5 chips)

My hyperX pc3000 is cas2. . .only $85 for 512mb. Maybe different in canada or whatever.

I would rather have the cas2 corsair than other cas2.5 stuff if you only have those choices.
