CAS Latency setting in 440BX BIOS

Hey all-

I've got a 440BX motherboard and in the BIOS it has three settings for CAS - one being the latency. It was defaulted to 3 so I set it to 2 and it runs fine at that although when the computer boots, it has a message which says the recommended setting is 3. Is this an issue to worry about?

Also, those other 2 settings for CAS are at 3, do I need to set them all to 2 in order to run at CAS2?

Thanks!!! I really appreciate it!

No,as long as your system is stable :)

To have your RAM running at its quickest (ie lowest latencey) you'll want to set all 3 settings to 2.Weather it'll be stable or not is down to potluck with CAS3 RAM ,it might be ,try it:)

BTW what m/brd are you using?

Check this. Usually you set them all to 2-2-2 or to 3-3-3. If your RAM can't handle 2-2-2, you'll know very soon.

That system seems to be running 222 perfect! The settings were defaulted to 333 and the RAM is high quality Micron.. running it great! Thanks!

I've also got a PIII 600 (100FSB) in there and I was tring to overclock it w/ FSB. It has the settings of 103, 112 and 133. The only setting I can get it to boot at is 103, any ideas on overclocking these chips? I've never tried...

Nighthawk69,

Did you try to overclock your FSB while your RAM was set at CAS 222? Depends on the RAM and Mobo, it should or should not work at higher FSB. Exactly what motherboard do you have? If your system won't boot at CAS222 @ 112mhz FSB, then try increasing the V core and I/O voltage by one notch. If this doesn't work, leave those voltage upped one notch and you might have to put the CAS back to 333 or 322(I dont know which order, you'll have to experiment till it works) However, another option is to leave your RAM timing to all 333 and you might be able to crank the FSB all the way to 133. I have P3 800EB @ 906mhz (6x 151) @ Mushkin PC150 @ CAS322. Yes, everything is stable "except" Quake3A.

shk:

Thanks for the tips - the board is a generic Intel 440BX and it won't do any FSB over 103 with any of those settings... its a hopeless OC =)

Which PIII 600 do you have? ,if its the Katmai PIII 600 with 512k cache then those cpu's are VERY poor overclockers ,Intel pushed the core to the limit with those. If your lucky you might get another 50-60MHz out of it.
If the board has the extra FSB settings then it will be the cpu thats at fault :(

Hmm, I'm not sure what kind of 600 it is but as it won't take an FSB over 103 that could very well be the problem. Thanks.

Some tips to try

Put all of your ram settings at 333 (for the time being)
try bumping your voltage up a little bit, try .05 or .1 for the time being

if its a katami, you will be going from 2.00 to 2.05, or 2.1
if its coppermine, it will most likely be 1.65 to 1.7, or 1.75 (or 1.6 -> 1.65, 1.7)

Look along the top edge of the cpu plastic casing ,note the S code & go to this Intel site to see which cpu you have :).
BTW the PIII 600 Katamai's were at 2.05v as default.
