Cartoon Network is showing anamorphic video

I turned on CN and noticed the anime looked smushed in 4:3. Widened it out, clearly 16:9 video. Hack something or other.

Never saw a channel do this before.

my mom always buys widescreen dvds for her normal TV, its drives me nuts on holidays when i gotta watch movies.

The cheap dvd player stretches the image and chops off the sides, like what you described.

The cheap dvd player stretches the image and chops off the sides, like what you described.

as far as i know, almost any and all dvd players will do letterboxing that is, it digitally adds the space on the bottom and top of a widescreen only dvd to make it appear ratio correct on a 4:3 TV. I haven't seen too many combo widescreen/fullscreen(pan and scan) dvds lately.

I know some default to either zooming or stretching the image. I know my friend's apex dvd player defaults to stretching the picture, screwing up the proportions. I don't even understand how she doesn't even notice this.
