Carrying puter parts on an airline

My kid is in the navy, stationed at Pearl and I will be flying to Hawaii to see him in June. I want to take all of the parts for a new XP for him to Hawaii except the case (I'll pick one up there). I want to pack it in my checked in lugage (not carry on) and my question is will the x-rays and such damage the parts (hard drive, CD ROM, mainboard, video, sound & modem cards, ect...)? You see, he's getting married and rather than see him going out the night before, I figured he could build a puter with his dad.

when I've got to fly with parts, hard drives go in racks and they ride as carry on with me,lol, protect that data !

I know that when I flew in December, my Palm Pilot worked fine when I left home, but was completely dead when I arrived at my destination. It was tucked safely away in my luggage, but so was a CD-R drive and it is fine (though it was in an antistatic bag). I tried new batteries but its dead.

I've seen signs that say it is safe to put electronic stuff through the machines that scan your carry-ons, but I don't know about things that go in with the luggage.

Laptops go through scanners all the time, with no apparent damage.
Checked baggage shouldn't be any different.

unless some baggage handler tosses it around like a moron

anybody remember the video of some northwest guys throwing packages into a bin? it was like 3 minutes long and they were trying all sorts of harlem-globetrooterish stuff

<< They don't x-ray checked bags.... would it be easier just to mail it? >>

Might be easier...but you get 2 free check-ins and 2 free carry-ons. Might as well use them 😉

My dad used to work as an airline ramp agent, and he said lots of his co workers would throw luggage around irregardless of what may be in them. To be safe, I'd go with a a carry on to ensure everything works when you arrive.

btw, congrats to you and your son.

I would definitely say carry them on. Not for the x-rays or scanners, but for the idiots between the the luggage check and the carosels(sp?)

Wow! Thanks for all your replies. I'll keep the stuff in anti-static bags and give it a whirl. I'm going to buy a case when I get there. Since the hard drive wonm't be formated, I would hope there won't be a problem. I can't wait until I get there. He's still using a 300mhz HP I bought him in New York about 4 years ago. This will be the boost he needs. He's a Nuke Operator on the Olympia (fast attack sub) and I'm proud of him!
