Are carports in general just terrible taste? I've pondered the idea because I have a long narrow lot that needs some covered vehicle parking. I also need a secure shed to keep personal belongings though....I don't think I'm going to get much added value with a detached garage that is also large enough for storage...however I could possibly do an attached carport much easier and build a smaller storage shed on the side.

I think that all three of those are very attractive. If a carport will suit your needs, go for it. I think I'd steer clear of a flat roof though.

Those look nice. This does not. However it's all about the function if that's what you can afford. I would rather have this than nothing regardless of how it looks.

Nothing wrong with a flat roof...in Los Angeles. ;)

Carports are better than nothing we have 2 large closets built into ours for storage along the back.

I built our garage with a carport on the front, you drive through that to get to the garage. My wife much prefers it to the garage, not driving into a cave, easy to open doors, etc.

Our addition in '04 was similar; no doors on the carport. I just emailed Overhead Door for a quote to install one on the front though.

Heh heh...

Cons:

-Large snow drifts inside carport.
-The world knows when we are/aren't home.
-Our van is dirty two days after I wash it from road dust/dirt.

I think the trend these days is parking out back - be it garage or carport. Looks tidier from the street.

I like em if i cant have a garage. Those ones all look tasteful and an an architectural detail to the house.
