I need some carpet installed on the cheap. around 33-34 sq yards of cheap white/off white berber. The furniture is moved and I will be ripping up the old carpet. I can even assist in hauling the stuff up and handle disposal.

Any tips on getting this done? / Finding someone to do it cheaply?

Would I be better of buying carpet and finding someone to install it, or getting it all at one shop?

Cut the carpet about every six feet and roll it up and toss it. Smaller pieces are easier to carry and get out the door.

Best bet is one stop shopping. The carpet stores have sub-contractors that install the carpet. Easier to deal with carpet store is problems arise.

I have some rental property so I purchase carpet fairly often.

If you remove it yourself, rip it up (it's easy once you're started) and then cut it into the 6 foot strips (mentioned above) from the BACK side with a utility knife. It's much easier!

If RCWilley is in your area they have a good selection of price ranges and their installation is reasonable, especially if catch them during a $99 installation sale.

i got 12x7 feet of carpeting installed in my bedroom earlier this year. i'm not really familiar with installations, so i went to a carpeting store and picked out the carpet. after that, they did everything for me: came and measured the area, then installed it the next day. it was a good deal.

What's under the carpet? Is it oak flooring? Why not leave it oak? I've never been able to figure out why people carpet over hardwood floors!

Honestly I wouldn't shop at home depot or one of the big boxes (other than RcWilley). You need to hit some of the local carpet stores. Home Deopt only sells really high priced carpets (not necessarly better). I was asstonished at how bad their prices were when I bought by carpet. You should have a major carpet sellar in your area, probably one of your local furniture stores. Find someone that has a whole warehouse of carpet in your city and you will find the best selection and best prices.

I should add that if you are carpeting a small area those large warehouse sellers sometimes have remanents that will fit your area and you can get a killer deal on good carpet.
